- The pandemic severely affected global migration: During the most severe months of confinement, between April and June 2020, the issuance of immigrant visas in the U.S. decreased 96.8%, in the United Kingdom the granting of settlements contracted 43.1%, in Australia the arrival of settlers fell 92.2%.
- The main migratory corridor in 2020 was from Mexico to the United States, with 3.9% of the world migration population. In 2020 there were 11.5 million Mexican migrants residing in the United States.
- The labor force of the Mexican migrant population is indispensable in essential sectors of the United States: in 2020 it represented 19.8% of jobs in the agricultural sector and 11.7% of food manufacturing.
- The COVID-19 crisis has impacted the U.S. job market. The unemployment rate of the Mexican immigrant population went from 6.6% in March to 17.1% in April 2020. Currently, between May and June 2021, it stood at 4.7%.
- Mexico is the third country that receives the most remittances in the world, only surpassed by India and China. Remittances to Mexico grew 11.4% in 2020, and are forecast to grow 21.7% by 2021, to 49.4 billion USD.

This publication marks nine years of a joint effort to present the annual trends and the most recent information related to the process, policies and results of migration and remittances in the world, including the 2020 Census estimates.
