Spain | Link between working hours and type of contract: has it changed after the reform?

    Summary

The type of contract helps to explain the differences in working hours between employees, especially for part-time workers. With some exceptions, the 2022 labour market reform does not seem to have affected the differential in working hours between contract types.

    Key points

    • Key points:
    • Weekly working hours decreased by 5.3% between 2007 and 2022. The decline was more pronounced among temporary employees than among permanent employees and the self-employed.
    • Regardless of personal and job characteristics and seasonality, regular permanent employees work more hours than the rest of the employed.
    • The deficit in working hours with respect to regular permanent employees is greater for those who work part-time. With some exceptions, the differences in working hours between contract types have hardly changed over time.
    • Comparing the effect of the type of contract on working hours before and after the entry into force of the 2022 labour reform, no significant changes are found.
    • We only observe a negative effect on the working hours of part-time seasonal temporary workers in 4Q22, probably caused by the rigidities imposed on this type of contract compared with permanent-discontinuous contracts.
