Spain | Impact of COVID-19 on consumption in real time and high frequency in jun-21
Summary
Card purchases in June were 28% higher than those made in the same month of 2019 (19% in May). Spending with Spanish cards, both face-to-face (24%) and online (128%) gained momentum, while that made with foreign cards continued to fall, but at a slower pace than in the preceding months.
Key points
- Key points:
- The increase in mobility stimulated purchases of services, especially in sectors such as hotels and leisure, and in those that involve travel, such as transport.
- Consequently, the share of services in the card spending basket reached 61% at the end of June, 5 and 12 points more, respectively, than in the same period of 2019 and 2020.
- Face-to-face purchases grew in 49 provinces compared to Jun-19 (47 in May and 32 in April). Recovery accelerated in some of inland Spain (Segovia, León, Cáceres, Burgos and Zamora).
- On the contrary, it was weaker in tourist areas not included in the UK green list (Tenerife) and in large cities, affected by holiday travel (Barcelona, Zaragoza and Madrid).
- Card cash withdrawals in June equaled 2019 figures for the first time since the start of the health crisis. Galicia and Andalusia led the growth of refunds last month.
