Spain | Impact of COVID-19 on consumption in real time and high frequency in jan-21

    Summary

Spending with BBVA credit and debit cards or BBVA POS terminals fell by -11% year-on-year in January, after rising 6% in December. The drop in face-to-face purchases, both with Spanish cards (-9%) and foreign (-68%), accompanied that of online purchases with foreign cards (-73%).

    Key points

    • Key points:
    • In January, spending increased in 6 provinces (36 in December) and decreased in 46 (16 in December). The increase exceeded 5% year-on-year in Melilla, Ceuta and Jaen. On the contrary, Huesca, Caceres, Badajoz, Illes Balears, Girona and La Rioja registered decreases of more than -20%.
    • Purchases lost traction in all sectors last month. They continued to grow in food, books and newspapers, home, health and other services. In large stores, automotive, sports and leisure fell, while those linked to social activities or travel intensified their decline.
    • The storm ‘Filomena’ aggravated the reduction in spending in some provinces of the centre, while restrictions on mobility had a greater impact on the territories with snow tourism.
