Spain | Exploring Artificial Intelligence
AI is a set of techniques to perform activities which have required human intelligence until now. Despite being in its infancy, it’s proving to be of great interest to researchers, companies and governments around the world. We explore its current main uses, barriers and overall degree of adoption by Spanish companies.

- In 2021, the European Commission published guidelines to steer the development of AI, allocating public resources and proposing governance to stimulate its development, while promoting trust in it and guaranteeing its proper use.
- Spain´s usage of AI lies within the EU-27 average, with 8% of its companies with more than ten employees using this technology. The Comunidad de Madrid, Cantabria and Castilla y León register the highest usage, where 9% of their companies use it, compared to La Rioja and Castilla-La Mancha, in which that percentage stands at around 4%.
- The most frequent uses include Natural Language Processing (used by almost 80% of the companies that use AI) followed by image identification (40.6%) and workflow automation & the assisting of decision-making (39%).
- At least 25% of companies have their own employees developing AI or making modifications to AI-purchased packages. In contrast, at least 43% are purchasing fully ready-to-use packages or outsourcing such a service when it comes to developing and/or modifying their AI systems.
- The main reasons why AI is being ruled out include lack of knowledge/capabilities within the company, costs and the availability/quality of the data.
