    Big Data techniques used

Spain | Evolution of card spending in real time and high definition in Jun-22

    Summary

Card purchases increased 34% year-on-year in June (42% in May). Both the face-to-face and online channels contributed to the year-on-year slowdown in spending, which was more pronounced in transactions with foreign cards than Spanish ones.

    Key points

    • Key points:
    • The increase in spending moderated in all sectors, except large stores. Containment was greater in those that sell services, especially tourism. The increase in purchases of basic necessities stabilized, but that of personal equipment items lost momentum.
    • Spending on other services, including e-commerce platforms, represented 25% of the total in Jun-22 (11% in Jun-19). Restoration, transport and leisure regained their pre-crisis weight. Travel and accommodation were close to the June-19 figures, while food, health, equipment and technology corrected the 2021 increase.
    • Face-to-face purchases grew in all provinces in June. Progress, which slowed down across the board, was greater in traditional tourist destinations, the Basque Country and Navarra.
    • The weight of transactions with foreign cards in face-to-face spending reached 9% in Jun-22, one point less than in Jun-19. In the islands and the Valencian Community, participation exceeded pre-pandemic thresholds.
