    Big Data techniques used

Spain | Evolution of card spending in real time and high definition in Apr-22

    Summary

Card purchases increased by 51% year-on-year in April (39% in March). Growth was greater in the online channel (81%) than in the face-to-face channel (40%), and both transactions with Spanish cards and, above all, with foreign cards gained momentum.

    Key points

    • Key points:
    • Spending picked up in sectors associated with Easter tourism, such as travel, accommodation, transport, restaurants, leisure and sports, and in those benefiting from the return to face-to-face work, such as beauty and fashion. The increase in purchases of equipment and health products was more modest.
    • Both the average ticket (9% year-on-year) and the number of operations (39%) contributed to the increase in spending, especially in the tourism sectors. The average amount fell in books, automotive, technology and health, but transactions grew in all sectors.
    • Face-to-face card purchases at Easter exceeded the 2019 records by 46% (34% more than at Easter 2021). The increase was greater in other services, restaurants, food and leisure, and in Andalusia (Jaén, Cádiz, Córdoba, Huelva and Seville), Tenerife and some inland provinces, such as Teruel, Ávila, Segovia and Badajoz.
    • Card cash withdrawals advanced 12% year-on-year in April and were 2% above the pre-pandemic level.
