Spain | COVID-19 during 2021: vaccines achieved and health cost of vaccine hesitancy

The health crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic has evolved over the two years since the virus was first detected. In this Working Paper we analyze how this evolution has been in Spain during 2021.

• First, we report significant differences in apparently similar health series depending on the data source.
• Second, we measure the trend in pressure on hospitals and intensive care units (ICUs).
• Third, we provide a picture of infections corrected for their capacity to generate severe disease and hospital pressure.
• Fourth, we estimate the pressure of the latest surge on primary medical care, in terms of the increase in health care staff needed to keep the workload per employee constant at pre-pandemic levels.
• Fifth, we estimate the effect of vaccination in terms of reducing infections, hospitalizations, ICU admissions, and deaths.
