Big Data techniques used

Spain | Analysis of national tourist flows in real time. September-December 2022

Between September and December 2022, tourist spending made by Spaniards outside their usual province of residence was 26 pp above the 2019 figures, according to data on spending with credit cards from BBVA. However, a stagnation is observed when compared with the immediately preceding four-month period.

Key points

  • Key points:
  • Similarly, total tourism spending (domestic and foreign) stood 34pp above 2019 in 3Q22 (1pp more than in the second quarter). The contribution of the two segments was similar.
  • During the Christmas holidays, spending exceeded the records of previous years (+25 compared to 2019). The advance was somewhat greater in the case of foreign tourism (+35pp).
  • In 2022 as a whole, tourist spending by Spaniards outside their usual province of residence stood 22 pp above the 2019 records (29 pp more than in 2021). The advance was somewhat higher if the effect of foreign tourism is added (30pp above 2019 levels).
  • Looking ahead to the coming months, growth is expected to begin to slow down, as indicated by the data on non-face-to-face card spending on travel and accommodation, which approximate tourist reservations.
  • The Canary Islands, Asturias, Murcia, Aragon and C. Valenciana were the most benefited destinations in the third quarter. On the other hand, less dynamism was observed in the Balearic Islands, Catalonia and abroad.
