Spain | Analysis of National Tourist Flows in Real Time in Aug-21
National tourism spending remained dynamic in August. The monthly growth reached 9% compared to 2019 levels (7% in July). If spending by Spaniards abroad is excluded, the increase was of 18% (18% in July).
Key points
- Key points:
- According to BBVA’s credit card spending data, August would have marked the first month where the increase in national tourism spending and the partial recovery of foreign consumption would have allowed to significantly exceed the levels of total tourism spending two years ago (+7%).
- The growth in recent months is not yet sufficient to compensate for the decline at the beginning of the year: so far in 2021 the cumulative fall is still 17% with respect to 2019 (-24% with data up to July).
- All autonomous communities remained above the pre-pandemic records. The Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands and Andalusia showed growths of more than 25%. Madrid recovered the 2019 levels at the end of the month.
- Residents in the Balearic and Canary Islands are the only ones who have not recovered the level of spending outside their community of residence and remain 20% below the levels from 2 years ago.
