Spain | Analysis of national tourist flows in real time between May and August of 2024

    Summary

The middle months of the year have been characterized by a slight acceleration in the growth of tourism spending in Spain compared to the first months of 2024, supported by both foreign and domestic tourism. This is inferred from the BBVA credit card spending data.

    Key points

    • Key points:
    • Between May and August 2024, total tourism spending (domestic and foreign) grew by 14.4% year-on-year (4 percentage points higher than in the previous four-month period). The trend was from more to less in the first three months of the period, reaching its lowest point in July. However, August data showed signs of recovery.
    • During the same period, tourism spending by Spaniards outside their usual province of residence recorded a 6.2% year-on-year increase (+2.7% year-on-year in the previous four-month period).
    • Similarly, spending by foreign tourists in Spain accelerated its growth to 23.7% year-on-year, 4 percentage points higher than the previous period.
    • Domestic tourism spending grew in all regions during the second four-month period of 2024, with the exception of the Balearic Islands. This is also the only region that recorded a variation lower than that of the previous period. On the other hand, the Basque Country, Castilla-La Mancha, and Navarra experienced the largest increases.
    • In general, some inland provinces (Sevilla, Toledo, Cáceres, and Zaragoza), as well as Bizkaia, Valencia, and Ceuta, showed the greatest increases during the second four-month period. On the other hand, some traditional summer destinations showed more weakness (Balearic Islands, Barcelona, Huelva, Tarragona, Malaga, Castellón, and Almeria).
