Spain | Analysis of national tourist flows in real time between May and August of 2023

    Summary

According to BBVA card spending data, the summer months have been characterized by a slight improvement in tourist spending compared to the beginning of the year, driven by the good behavior of consumption by Spaniards and despite the sluggishness of tourism by of foreigners.

    Key points

    • Key points:
    • Between May and August 2023, total tourist spending (domestic and foreign) would have been 44 pp above observed during the same period in 2019 (only 1 pp more than in the previous quarter.
    • In the same period, tourist spending by Spaniards outside their usual province of residence would have located 32 pp above the 2019 records (4 pp more than in the previous quarter).
    • The monthly evolution of foreign spending was decreasing throughout the four-month period. After having reached maximum In May, growth slowed and remained around 50 pp above 2019 records in the rest of the period.
    • Castilla-La Mancha, Aragon, the Canary Islands and the Basque Country were the destinations that benefited the most in the second quarter. On the other hand, less dynamic behavior would have been observed in Catalonia, Madrid and abroad.
    • BBVA data correlates with INE data and allows us to anticipate a slight acceleration in Spanish household spending on tourism during 3Q23. However, they also point to stagnation in non-resident consumption.
