Spain | Analysis of national tourist flows in real time between January and April of 2023

During the first four months of the year, total tourist spending (domestic and foreign) was 39pp above that observed during the same period of 2019 (5pp more than in the previous four-month period), according to spending data with BBVA credit card.

Key points

  • Key points:
  • The greater boost in spending by foreign travelers would have offset the slowdown in that of nationals.
  • Between January and April 2023, tourist spending by Spaniards outside their usual province of residence would have been 21 pp above the 2019 records. However, a slowdown is observed when compared to the immediately previous four-month period.
  • During the Holy Week festivities, national spending would have considerably exceeded the records of previous years (+47 compared to 2019). The advance was somewhat greater in the case of foreign tourism (+64pp).
  • Looking ahead to the coming months, growth is expected to remain at these levels, as indicated by the data on non-face-to-face card spending on travel and accommodation, which approximates tourist reservations.
  • Castilla-La Mancha, C. Valenciana, Murcia and Aragón were the most benefited destinations in the third quarter. On the other hand, in the Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Madrid and abroad a less dynamic behavior would have been observed.
