    Big Data techniques used

Peru | Tracking consumption with real-time data in April 2022

    Summary

In April, BBVA Research's big data consumption index (inflation-adjusted spending with cards and cash withdrawals) increased 13,0% compared to the same month in the previous year (11.0% YoY in March).

    Key points

    • Key points:
    • With respect to April 2019, prior to the pandemic, it is important to note that household spending remained relatively stable at 21% above.
    • Within total spending, the share of card purchases remains stable (39% card purchases and 61% cash withdrawals). Within card purchases, the use of the online channel maintained a high share (43% in March 2022; 20% in 2019).
    • BBVA Research's consumption indicator suggests that, in the first quarter of 2022, private consumption continued to grow (relative to 2021), but at a slower rate than that observed in the fourth quarter of 2021. However, at the beginning of the second quarter of the year (April) a slight acceleration is observed.
