Peru | Real-time analysis of the impact of COVID-19 on consumption (up to August 31)

Card consumption slowed down in the second half of August, but its level remains above that recorded in a similar period in 2019. The decline was in line with the return of mandatory confinement measures on Sundays and a normalization of pace of expenditure

Key points

  • Key points:
  • Spending on supermarkets, pharmacies and entertainment subscriptions, very dynamic during confinement, has tended to moderate in the last two weeks.
  • Card spending on home goods and services has slowed, after a strong rebound when the quarantine was lifted in early July.
  • Stagnant recovery of expenditure in areas such as transport and fashion and beauty
  • In sectors such as tourism and entertainment, spending levels are still lagging behind, because these activities continue to have low operational levels.
  • Cash withdrawals remain below the levels observed in the previous year.
