    Peru | Agricultural Exports Report

    Summary

The boom in agricultural exports has been one of the greatest achievements of the Peruvian economy over the past twenty years. This has been particularly true for fruits and vegetables, mainly sent to Europe and the US. This performance has placed Peru among the most important global suppliers for some products.

    Key points

    • Key points:
    • Among the factors that explain the performance of Peruvian agricultural exports, we have: (i) a greater global demand for food, (ii) enhanced coordination among different sectors, (iii) trade openness (free trade agreements), (iv) a special tax and labor regime, (v) the expansion of agricultural land, and (vi) the use of comparative advantages in the production of some food
    • Turning to the elements that could continue supporting the development of agricultural exports, we highlight: (i) increase market share in economies that are rapidly expanding, (ii) reorienting production to more profitable crops, (iii) the provision of better infrastructure (unlocking paralyzed irrigation projects), (iv) reducing logistic costs, and (v) creating strategies that empower the growth of exporting companies
