Mexico | Working poverty near its lowest level, but there are increases in rural poverty

    Summary

In the fourth quarter of 2024, the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (Coneval) estimated that 35.4% of the population in Mexico was in a situation of working poverty, which represents an increase of 0.3 percentage points compared to the previous quarter.

    Key points

    • Key points:
    • Working poverty increased by 0.3 percentage points (pp) from 35.1% to 35.4% between the third and fourth quarters of 2024, which is almost entirely explained by an increase in working poverty in rural areas. Even so, at the national level and in urban areas, working poverty is close to its lowest levels.
    • Hidalgo (-11.7 pp), Mexico City (-9.5 pp), Yucatán (-9.1 pp), Quintana Roo (-8.5 pp) and Nayarit (-7.9 pp) were the entities where labor poverty decreased the most between the 2019-IV and 2024-IV quarters.
    • Cuernavaca, Tapachula and Tlaxcala were ranked in the first three positions among the cities with the highest proportion of their population in working poverty in the fourth quarter of 2024, while at the opposite end are Cancún, La Paz and Ciudad Juárez.
    • In the case of the employed population, as of 2024-IV, 11.9% of the population within this group was in working poverty, being the lowest value since the first quarter of 2015.
