    Mexico | Will there be a reconfiguration in the Migration Map?

    For the fourth time so far this year, remittances have exceeded their all-time high. The Migration Intensity Index 2020 suggests a reconfiguration of the Migratory Map in Mexico in 2020, where the Traditional region no longer seems to have a dominant hegemony in migration compared to other regions.

    • A new historical maximum is reached in the reception of remittances in Mexico. For the fourth time so far this year, remittances have exceeded their historical maximum, in the month of August a record is imposed in remittances, receiving 4,744 million US dollars (+ 32.7%).
    • The growth in remittances is explained by improvements in employment conditions in the United States, in August the unemployment rate fell to 5.2%. In addition, it is observed that the jobs of the Hispanic population have recovered faster than the national average.
    • Conapo recently published the 2020 Migration Intensity Index. It is found that four states had a Very High Degree of Migratory Intensity in that year: Zacatecas, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Guanajuato.
