Mexico | Rebound in credit to the private sector reflects the depreciation of the Peso

    Summary

In March 2020, the balance of current credit granted by commercial banks to the private sector grew at a nominal annual rate of 10.5% (7.0% real), almost 5.0 percentage points (pp) above the rate observed the previous month (5.4%), but less than the nominal rate of 11.1% registered in March 2019.

    Key points

    • Key points:
    • Credit to companies more than triples its nominal growth rate driven by the valuation effect of the exchange rate
    • Growth in consumer credit accentuates its slowdown, reaching below 5.0% in the first quarter of the year
    • Home loan reduces its growth rate
