Mexico | More than a third of the population in labor poverty, according to Coneval
This note analyzes the latest measurement regarding the proportion of the population in Mexico that is in labor poverty in the second quarter of 2024, carried out by the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (Coneval).

- From 2024-I to 2024-II, this indicator has remained without significant changes at levels between 35.8% and 35.0%.
- The gap (difference between the proportion) between labor poverty in urban and rural areas, from 2024-Q1 to 2024-Q2 decreased by 1.6pp in absolute terms (it went from 18.3 to 16.7).
- From January 2020 to July 2024, the cost of the rural food basket grew by 43.7% and 42.2% in urban areas, while general inflation (measured by the INPC) was only 27.8%.
- Between 2020-Q1 and 2024-Q2, per capita labor income in Mexico grew by 50.3% in current pesos, 19.4% in real terms, and adjusted for the cost of the food basket by only 8.6%.
- By the second quarter of 2024, 36.1% of the employed population living in indigenous municipalities is in labor poverty, reaching a historic low; however, its proportion is still three times higher than the national average (12.0%).
