Mexico | Flexibility in the national electrical system and renewable energy are compatible
The causes of the blackout are still being analyzed, I consider that the solution to the problem consists of making the electrical system more flexible given the share of variable renewable energy in the grid and not by reducing the generation from these clean sources of electricity due to the lack of enough flexibility.
Key points
- Key points:
- Keeping an electric grid stable before disturbances like the one we witnessed some days ago, the controllability of the grid requires resources for the production of reactive power and some conventional generators could be retrofitted and used for synchronous condensing.
- The great advantage of variable renewable energy not only does come from zero carbon emissions when generating electricity, but also from using inputs (like wind or sun) free of charge.
- The path that is convenient for Mexico to follow in terms of incorporating variable renewable energy in the electric grid is out of question given the sizable economic, environmental and health benefits.
