    Mexico | Does 1 in 5 pesos of remittances come from Mexicans in the construction sector?

    In November, remittances to Mexico grew 37.7%. In 2021, the Mexican migrants in the United States grew to 11.9 million, 1 in 5 are employed in the construction sector. Several countries in Latin America and the Caribbean have also reported significant increases in their income from remittances.

    • Last November, 4,665 million USD entered Mexico, with a growth of 37.7%. By the end of 2021, they are shaping up to surpass their all-time high for the sixth consecutive year.
    • The average remittance was $401 USD, an amount not observed for more than 20 years.
    • In the midst of the pandemic, the Mexican migrants in the United States grew to 11.9 million in 2021, 400 thousand more than in 2020.
    • 1 in 5 Mexican migrants are employed in the Construction sector. Other important sectors are: 1) Professional and business services, 2) Manufacturing, and 3) Leisure and hospitality, each with more than 12% participation.
    • Remittances to Guatemala increased 37.9%, to Colombia 35.6%, to El Salvador 20.4% and to the Dominican Republic 11.2% last November.
