Mexico | Avocado GDP estimate reflects the relevance and growth of the product
Avocado is one of Mexico's main consumption and export products. We estimate the GDP of avocado from 2018 to 2022 by the production method using a deterministic approximation and official sources. The results are consistent with the growth that the product has experienced in production and monetary value in recent years.
Key points
- Key points:
- Avocado has gained relevance in the Mexican economy due to increased production and high international demand. In 2000, 93.5 thousand hectares were planted; while in 2020 there were 241.1 thousand hectares, 157.8% more than in 2000
- We estimate the Avocado GDP for the years 2018 to 2022 at the national and state level based on the Input-Output Matrix as a starting point, identified intermediate consumption inputs and constructed an Avocado-specific PPI. Avocado GDP in 2018 was 37 mmdp and in 2022 was 42 mmdp, with an average annual growth of 3.2%.
- The estimated Avocado GDP is consistent with production both in tons, as well as in monetary value. Michoacán remains the leader with almost 70% of GDP, followed by Jalisco and the State of Mexico.
