Mexico | After 3 years, urban labor poverty is already showing levels below pre-pandemic

    Summary

Regarding the recent Coneval report, the main labor poverty indicators updated to the fourth quarter of 2022 are presented. Additionally, an analysis of the population in labor poverty condition by urban and rural area, state, and formal-informal employment situation is included.

    Key points

    • Key points:
    • Discounting the seasonal factor, the labor poverty indicator in Mexico accumulated six consecutive quarters of decline at the annual rate, from the third quarter of 2021 to the fourth quarter of 2022. In this last period, 38.5% of the population was in labor poverty condition.
    • After three years, labor poverty in the urban area during the fourth quarter of 2022 (34.5%) has already managed to reach levels below those of pre-pandemic.
    • As of the fourth quarter of 2022, in Veracruz, Zacatecas, Oaxaca, Guerrero, and Chiapas, more than half of the population was in labor poverty.
    • The proportion of the employed population in labor poverty stood at 0.8% for formal employment and 21.4% for informal ones in the fourth quarter of 2022. These indicators have had little variability compared to the previous quarter.
