Global | Sustainable Trade: Going Beyond

    Summary

Sustainability is not a normative objective, related with values, apart from making efficient use of scarce resources. On the contrary, it is a positive imperative: evidence is building up that temperatures are rising rapidly, and there is mounting concern over the negative consequences of non-inclusive growth.

    Key points

    • Key points:
    • Europe's sustainability strategy must stretch beyond its own borders if it is to be effective, a fact which is reflected by the focus in the EU-Mercosur Trade Agreement on climate change and social inclusion.
    • The transition to a low-carbon economy will require increased use of instruments that facilitate sustainable trade, such as emission border adjustment mechanisms.
