Colombia | Women: greater balance in the allocation of household and care work
Care work has a significant impact on women's approach to work. Promoting between family members a balance in the time spent on care and unpaid work would make it possible to increase women's labor participation, their income and their individual as well as collective well-being.
Key points
- Key points:
- In Colombia, for every 100 men who engage in unpaid housework, there are 755 women who do so. This reveals a wide imbalance in the allocation of household and care work between men and women.
- Care work, along with other characteristics of women's participation in the labor market, is evidenced in a wide gender gap in labor participation in Colombia; thus, while 2 out of 4 women participate in the labor market, looking for a job or working, 3 out of 4 men do so.
- Promoting a balance in the time spent on care and unpaid work between family members would make it possible to increase women's labor participation, their income and their individual and collective well-being. This goal is not easy because it requires consensus on the need for it in society, in order to uproot deeply rooted cultural beliefs and behaviors.
