    Big Data techniques used

Colombia | Weekly update BBVA Tracker: Consumption. 13 May, 2021

    Summary

Consumption in May is slightly below that recorded prior to the pandemic. Despite the end of the mobility restrictions imposed by Covid-19, the days of protests and roadblocks caused consumption to decelerate by 1.5 percentage points compared to April.

    Key points

    • Key points:
    • Spending in restaurants rebounded during the Mother's Day weekend but was not enough to compensate the slowdown of the rest of the month, being 40% below the pre-pandemic level.
    • Fuel spending has been the sector most affected by the roadblocks and protests and has fallen back to levels similar to those recorded in Aug-20 (-25% vs. pre-pandemic levels).
    • Online commerce contributed to moderating part of the negative impact of the protests and roadblocks on consumption, growing close to 30% in the first days of the month.
    • In Cali, the city that has seen the most violent confrontations and the longest days of protests, consumption so far in May is 23% below that recorded in the same period in 2019, being the city with the greatest impact.
