DANE published departmental GDP figures for 2023. It is noteworthy that, despite the good growth performance of some departments, there are large regional disparities, which are mainly evidenced in the share of national GDP, contribution to total growth and GDP per capita.

• Bogota grew 0.6% annually, the same as the country and, coincidentally, half of the departments grew more and the other half less than the national average. The departments that grew the best were Meta, Chocó and Cesar. On the contrary, those with the lowest growth were San Andres y Providencia, Arauca and Cauca.
• Four departments and Bogota produce 60.3% of the national GDP. Bogota leads with 25%, while Antioquia (14.7%), Valle (9.7%), Santander (6.4%) and Atlántico (4.5%) complete the ranking of the five regions with the highest productive activity. During 2023, the main contributors to growth were Bogotá, Meta and Santander, which accounted for 56% of annual national GDP growth.
• There are large heterogeneities, especially with the departments on the periphery of the country. For example, the ten departments with the lowest participation in the national GDP produce 2.2% of the total and contributed only 1.8% of the annual variation, which also represent 39% of the national area.
• Peripheral departments such as Vichada, Vaupés, Guainía and Chocó have a GDP per capita that is one third of the national average. These less developed regions base their GDP mainly on the public sector, education and health.
