Colombia | Big Data Consumption Tracker. 6 may, 2022

    Summary

Household consumption accelerated in April. The boost came especially from the services sector. In 2022, Easter occurred without any restrictions on social interaction, boosted tourism and benefited from low statistical bases in April 2021.

    Key points

    • Key points:
    • By category, in the first part of the month, the boost came especially from the services sector associated with tourism (travel and hotels). At the end of the month, spending on goods resumed a dynamic of growth (department stores and apparel) and broke its previous dynamic of deceleration.
    • In April, the use of cash grew and digital channels declined. This is due to the fact that tourism, the activity that grew the most, especially during Easter Week, is usually linked to informal activities with a high use of cash.
    • At the city level, spending slowed in Bogota, a city that has little association with tourism, while it accelerated in coastal cities (Barranquilla and Cartagena) and in Cali and Medellin. Bucaramanga and Pereira had the lowest accelerations at the margin.
    • Spending in drugstores is the group that showed the least dynamics in April. This is possibly associated with the low level of Covid-19 infections and lower seasonal illness due to colds.
