Catalonia Economic Outlook. Second half 2019

    Summary

Catalonia's GDP is expected to increase by 1.8% in 2019 and by 1.6% in 2020. This will enable the creation of around 115,000 new jobs between the end of 2018 and 2020, and reduce the unemployment rate to 11.0%

    Key points

    • Key points:
    • The slowdown in domestic consumption, the main factor explaining the lower dynamism of the Catalan economy
    • Barcelona city and the urban area of Girona have been the most dynamic areas in the creation of employment during the expansion, and exceed in more than 3 pp the level of pre-crisis employment. But non-urban areas are still 5 pp below that level
    • The Catalan economy will create 115,000 jobs in the biennium ending at the end of 2020
    • External (protectionism, brexit, Europe's growth...) and internal uncertainty are increasing
